Conference report: “Infringements of Designs Protected by Design Law and Copyright”

The conference report for the latest Knowledge and Awareness Building Conference jointly organised by the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM), Europol (EU’s law enforcement agency) and Eurojust (EU's Judicial Cooperation Unit) has been released.

This latest conference, held on November 2015, focused on infringement of designs protected by design law and copyright by addressing different specific topics such as the implications of 3D printing.  

The published report compiles the presentations made by the international speakers on design infringements, the disparities in current national legislation and enforcement issues together with the main findings and conclusions of the event.

A new design classification tool: DesignClass

The Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM) has just launched DesignClass, the most extensive free online resource of pre-accepted product indications available to users.

The new design classification tool is based on a Harmonised Database of Product Indications (HDBPI) containing approximately 13,000 concepts including Locarno Classification terms and other terms pre-approved and pre-validated by 24 participating EU offices, in 23 EU languages.

Celebrating the importance of design: DesignEuropa Awards

The Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM) has launced the first edition of the DesignEuropa Awards.

The Awards are open to firms and/or individuals who hold a valid Registered Community Design (RCD). The RCD is a unitary intellectual property right administered by OHIM and valid throughout the EU-28.

The DesignEuropa Awards will be given in three categories:

  • Industry (firms with more than 50 employees and over €10 million turnover)
  • Small and Emerging companies (firms with fewer than 50 employees and less than €10 million turnover, or companies established after January 1, 2013)
  • Special Lifetime Achievement Award

Applications for entry will open through OHIM's website on February 1, 2016 and the award ceremony will be held in Milan, Italy, in December 2016.

Finland joins Designview

The Finnish Patent and Registration Office (PRH) has made its industrial design data available to the Designview search tool, as a concrete result of the International Cooperation programme managed by OHIM in collaboration with its international partners.

This latest integration of Finland brings the number of available designs in Designview to almost 9 million in total from 47 participating offices.

Designview provides an invaluable source for any Internet user to conduct a 7/24, free of charge search among the designs of all participating offices including OHIM.

New countries for Designview: Poland and Serbia

As of 26 October 2015, Poland and Serbia become the newest countries, which made their industrial design data available to the Designview search tool.

As a concrete result of the International Cooperation programme managed by OHIM in collaboration with its international partners, the latest integrations of the Polish Patent Office and the Intellectual Property Office of the Republic of the Serbia bring the number of available designs in Designview to almost 8,8 million in total from 38 participating offices.

Designview welcomes The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia

Following to its participation to TMview, The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) has also made its industrial design data available to the Designview search tool, the centralised access point to view the designs held by any of the participating offices.

As a concrete result of the International Cooperation programme managed by OHIM in collaboration with its international partners, this latest integration of FYROM brings the number of available designs in Designview to almost 8,7 million in total from 36 participating offices.

The new on-line application form for Registered Community Designs

The Office of Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM) has presented the new on-line filing form for Registered Community Design (RCD) applications.

The form brings the new “3D image uploader” in use, which allows the applicants to submit their designs from different camera angles in their on-line applications in a user-friendlier, faster and seamless interface.

WIPO Intellectual Property Advantage database

The World Intellectual Property Organization IP Advantage database contains a wide range of case studies giving real examples on intellectual property protection (patents, trade marks, and industrial designs), management and exploitation. The database is an extensive source of information and best practices for Small and Medium-sized enterprises dealing with IP.

OHIM’s European workshop roadshow

OHIM experts are on European roads to inform you about Office’s online services, classification tools and much more in 10 different destinations around the continent between September and December 2015. Participants will have the opportunity to put forward their questions, have first-hand information and advices on OHIM services in three hour workshops, co-organised with local partners.

Together with the on-site events, it will be possible for online users to follow five of the workshops through their computers.
