Copyright is an intellectual property right (IPR) that grants authors, artists and other creators protection for their literary, artistic and scientific creations, generally referred to as “works”.

No matter if you are a copyright owner or a copyright user, the understanding of the copyright basics is crucial to any business. In essence, it must be borne in mind that safeguarding your own copyright and securing the permission of third parties before using copyrighted materials is not only legally required but also a good business practice.

SME case studies

The European Patent Office (EPO), in close collaboration with renowned IP experts, has published a set of twelve case studies on a range of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from across Europe.

The studies show how companies can proactively adapt their IP strategy to real business needs, and illustrate the variety of approaches to and advantages of using IP. They also highlight the benefits that SMEs can expect from the planned Unitary Patent. This reform will offer businesses a simpler alternative to the existing system, and introduce a more cost-effective route to broad and uniform patent protection and dispute resolution throughout the participating EU member states.

Guide: Successful collaboration between companies and research institutes

Luxinnovation, an organisation that contributes to the economic development of Luxembourg by fostering innovation, fuelling international growth and attracting foreign direct investment, has developed a guide, together with:

  • IPIL (Institut de la Propriété Intellectuelle Luxembourg)
  • FNR (Luxembourg National Research Fund), and
  • the Luxembourguish Ministry of Economy

on how to succeed with public-private R&D collaboration and what it takes to start that kind of collaboration. The guide focuses on collaborative research and how to find the right R&D partner. It also provides an overview of available funding.

CIFRA survey on ICT-related patents

Within the framework of the CIFRA project (Challenging the ICT Patent Framework for Responsible Innovation), a project within Horizon 2020 of the European Commission, a survey has been developed to collect the opinions and attitudes of stakeholders involved in or with the ICT sector towards the current patent regime. With this survey, the CIFRA Consortium, whose partners are Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (DE), Telefónica Investigación y Desarrollo SA (ES), Università Commerciale Luigi Bocconi (IT) and Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (ES), aims to review the issues and possible improvements related to the current framework for ICT patents to promote responsible innovation.

The deadline for answering the survey is the end of July.

Intellectual property management at trade fairs

Trade fairs and exhibitions are very important marketing tools for companies, in particular for SMEs. They help to attract new customers, test products, access new markets, raise the image, profile and popularity of a company or product, and enhance competitiveness.

While, trade fairs can facilitate intellectual property (IP) infringements, they can also help IP owners detect such infringements. Therefore, exhibitors must be aware of all the IP issues that can arise in the context of trade fairs and take appropriate measures before, during and after the show.
