How can research and innovation in Europe be fostered? Where do we stand and where are we heading? The High Level Group on Maximising EU R&I Impact chaired by Pascal Lamy has published a very interesting and comprehensive report on maximising the impact of EU research and innovation programmes. The report clearly places research and innovation as a key geopolitical factor for the future of Europe addressing European institutions, national governments as well as other stakeholders such as companies, universities, research institutes or non-governmental organisations.
Highlighting the importance of research impact, the report recommends to privilege “impact over process” and adopt a mission-oriented approach to address global challenges. Besides financial investment and innovative collaborations, a smart IP strategy is crucial for bringing ideas and technologies all the way from the LAB to the FAB. Dealing with IP matters every day, the European IPR Helpdesk is there to support SMEs and researchers in maximising their research impact through careful IP management.
Summarising the core messages of the report, the High Level Group has published 11 recommendations aimed at maximising the impact of future EU research and innovation programmes. Each of the recommendations is exemplified by a key action.
